The Sunday Times Ireland - March 3, 2012 -

"A desire to avoid "making other people's stuff" is what led Fiona Snow, an architectural model maker, to set up her paper-product business, Snow, last year. Having returned from working for an architect in America she bought a laser-cutting machine and says she hasn't looked back since.
“It took me a couple of years to save up for it but it was totally worth it. It's very liberating," says Snow, 29, who lectures in model-making at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design, and Technology. Her range of delicately cut paper products includes colourful light towers, miniature houses, birdhouses and stationery. She also makes acrylic-based products such as her latest item to be stocked at Designist: a photo frame reminiscent of a small Connect Four game.
Snow's designs have sold steadily and she has a large order of light towers from a day spa. The attention to detail in each product is painstakingly accurate, from the tiny, delicate shapes to the boxes that contain the products.
"The packaging is my guilty pleasure. I put far too much work into it, making these perfectly straight boxes," she says.
This hands on approach is far removed from how you might imagine design products come to life. The machines cut the actual designs but everything is assembled, and glued, by Snow and her husband at her parents' house.
"We think this time next year we'll need some extra people," she says.
As with some peers, Snow received financial and business support from her enterprise board and the Crafts Council of Ireland. She sees the potential for an industrial design scene in Ireland.
"My students leave college with amazing skills and enthusiasm but nowhere to go. The design industry has legs and I believe in the talent here and want it to stay and be fostered,"she says.
